Nvidia support für Linux 2.6

www.minion.de: "The patches you will find here are intended primarily for those who wish to use a combination of Linux 2.6 and a NVIDIA driver release without support for this new kernel, but they can also be used with Linux 2.4. This may be interesting for users of older revisions of the NVIDIA driver, who may benefit from backported bug fixes. Linux 2.2 is no longer supported"

TP: Geldknappheit im Kapital-Ismus

Halt!

iRATE radio home

Quasi OpenMusic ;) Man schaue mal auf die Website von iRATE radio home: "RATE radio is a collaborative filtering client/server mp3 player/downloader. The iRATE server has a large database of music. You rate the tracks and it uses your ratings and other people's to guess what you'll like. The tracks are downloaded from websites which allow free and legal downloads of their music."

Kostenlose MPEG-4-Software vom Fraunhofer Institut

Putting Novell's SuSE Purchase In Perspective

Das sollte man wohl mal lesen...
Slashdot | Putting Novell's SuSE Purchase In Perspective: "The editors over at NewsForge.com have combined their efforts to put today's big news about Novell's purchase of SUSE in perspective: what the news means in business terms and to the Linux community, today and in the future. A good read that includes quotes from industry insiders, IRC inhabitants, and NewsForge.com readers.' Another reader writes 'This is a good analysis piece about how Linux has become Novell's lifeline, especially since NetWare's been dying...and post-Ximian."

General System Setup

Hmmm... gut zu wissen... General System Setup: "Issuing the command hostname new_host_name may not be enough. To avoid the dreaded sendmail lock, follow these steps (only valid for a stand--alone machine):
* edit /etc/sysconfig/network and change the hostname therein (e.g. new_host_name.your_domain);
* edit /etc/HOSTNAME appropriately;
* append the new hostname in the line in /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost new_host_name.your_domain"

Levitating, Meditating, Flute-playing Gnu

GNU Project - Levitating, Meditating, Flute-playing Gnu - Free Software Foundation (FSF): "This color drawing depicts a levitating gnu, deep in meditation, wrapped snuggly in a gold robe. Both he and his computer float gracefully above the floor--only his tail lightly touches the ground. He gently holds a flute between his front hooves, as if he has just gotten the inspiration to play music. There is a gleam in his eyes as he gazes ahead at his computer screen."

nVidia Problems

Installation Infos

After the installation, the X-server may fail to start with the following error:
INIT: rc.gui: /opt/kde2/bin/kdm or X11 startup problems!
For X11, try running 'kxconfig' as root
INIT: Switching to runlevel:3
INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal
Press to continue

Press "ENTER" and login as root.
Edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and change the line:
kernel=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.13-modular vga=274 quiet root=/dev/hda1
to
kernel=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.13-modular vga=791 quiet root=/dev/hda1

vga=791, frame buffering 1024x768 (max. Internal resolution)

For convenience, here is the Frame Buffer table in decimal terms

> Colors 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
> --------+---------------------------------------------
> 256 | 769 771 773 775 796
> 32,768 | 784 787 790 793 797
> 65,536 | 785 788 791 794 798
> 16.8M | 786 789 792 795 799

The nVidia GeForce4 420 Go 16MB video chip is not supported in the Xfree86 4.1.0 engine (nor under 4.2.1 engine) therefore, you can
use the generic VESA driver with frame buffering.
A good 1024x768 16bit (64k colour) wasreached.

If you want to use the full support of the nVidia GeForce4 420 Go video chip, you need to download the latest Linux "nvidia" driver version
1.0-3123 or newer available at:

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_1.0-3123

IrDA fuer Toshiba

Installation Infos
Eine Anleitung um IrDA zu installieren:

Download and install Daniele Peri's Toshsat1800-irdasetup:
http://www.csai.unipa.it/peri/toshsat1800-irdasetup/

If you installed it in /usr/local/sbin then add the following lines to
your /etc/modules.conf
#
# IRDA settings
#
pre-install smc-ircc /usr/local/sbin/toshsat1800-irdasetup
options smc-ircc ircc_dma=3 ircc_irq=7 ircc_cfg=0x2e ircc_sir=0x2e8
ircc_fir=0x2f8
alias irda0 smc-ircc

start irda manually by irattach irda0 -s and check whether it works by
putting an irda device in range and running irdadump.

if you want to start and stop the services via the init scripts of
redhat then you have to edit the file /etc/sysconfig/irda as follows
IRDA=yes
DEVICE=irda0
DISCOVERY=yes

and then you can start (or stop) irda by

/etc/init.d/irda start (or stop)

For Palm synch (gpilotd in Gnome2) and Nokia 6510 synch (gammu) I simply
specified the port /dev/ircomm0 and it magically worked.

Special Thanks to Giuseppe Castagna for this infromation.
